Inspiration

This is what I think I am going to base my light around. Its not the thunder cloud I started with but I think it is a better choice. I want to make this massive as well probably around ten or twelve feet long. This effect will be created by the shape that inspired the idea for this. After watching the paper folding video I liked the idea of the one fold. So I began playing with different shapes such as circles, squares, and rectangles. But it wasnt until I hit on a triangle that i folded from the point to the flat. After laying these in different patterns that simulated corrugations, scales, and piece part circles. I liked the idea of starting to combine a couple of these. As soon as I put the piece part circle and the scales next to each other I saw the potential for a really cool sculpture. In order paper shape, shape orientation, "hey that looks like a comet", lets make a comet sculpture. 

Im thinkin celestial clouds

I think this could work. I'm playin with the idea of GINORMOUS celestial clouds.

yes people....this is the A from our word EXPAND modified and with a lens and light added to it. This will now hang on the wall of my apartment.

LIGHTS WONDER AND MAJESTY

Now for the project I have been waiting for all semester....the lights. Its funny I hate lights but I have so much fun making them. I have made several lanterns for myself and other people out of copper, brass, wood. glass, and steel but I have never tried a simple light out of paper before I'm really looking forward to this.

First group project funny

I just noticed that the first group project I did with Ashley, Kat, and Kate in our group picture I'm wearing my university of Missouri S&T shirt. Product placement big time. But I guess that can happen when your born and raised in Missouri.

Final book

The expanding book of expand is almost complete. I did every like of kids book gimmick I could think  of on my first draft but the general consensus was "OVERWHELMING." So now its toned back and hopefully looks more concentrated and intuitive. But more than likely I missed something. But I guess hindsight is always 20/20.

PHOTO ESSAY

The expanding book of expand is in production. Yes I have a tendency to throw everything including the kitchen sink into a project and for once I have a legitimate reason to do this. But I guess there is a limit to everything. My first draft book was a completely lame butcher paper tear and fold. My second is more extravagant than most french palaces. I think I might be going a little over board on this project but I want the grade.

letters and light

Photographing the letters was a huge task for the simple fact of you cant just put them anywhere and say "that expands sure lets do that." We chose to photograph the letters in natural light so we were at the mercy of the sun. We never could seem to get a good angle because as we kept changing location the sun would move to foil our plans. So PHOTOSHOP HERE WE GO!!!

Forwards or side ways

Which way demonstrates expand the best to project letters sideways or out wards in order to achieve the. Desired effect of making the viewer see the word expand as we'll as read it?

Expand

Onto a new project and that project is words or at least how they look. Our word is EXPAND which is not on the word list but whatever. According to a google search the word EXPAND means to become or make larger or more extensive. Now to show this in an image and in a photo essay. This will be interesting.

how do you build greatness

Human beings have been on this earth for the better part of 15000 years, how do we go about being original with so much behind us and so much surrounding us. Yes, we can pick something very specific to focus on but the laws of mathmatical probability state that we will produce something that will show near identical signs and appearance of something that has been done before us. So should we really be focusing on reminding the world of something great that has already happened? I think as designers it is our goal to be creative and try and stumble onto something new and innovative but doing so without losing sight of our goal which in the end may just steer use right into a what of "been there done that."

to the movies

Does the movie for this design assignment really have to follow the product or can it be a artistic representation of the the ideals behind the object. Barbequing is a time honored tradition all across the globe and more often than not these days its centered around a weekend or a party normally in the summer. So who can say that a movie about a newer better set of grilling tools has to show them in comparison to the originals or even in the context of who is using them. Objects in general are something that post purchase immedaitly we begin to make our own and they like all the objects around use begin to be part of us. So should we really be making a movie about us?

Prototype

Prototyping!!! I'm going nuts doing these they are a lot if fun but keep me oh so busy. I'm just glad I have the girls to work on the poster and process book this time around. Margie said that card board and what not would be fine but heck with that we are doin this for real man!!

Falling behind on the blog

I haven't posted in the blog in awhile. I've been too busy working on projects and homework. I wonder how much this counts against me.

Prototyping

Stuff just got real. Now let's do some real designing. So we settled on a pair of grilling tongs that really suck and a in need of fixing. We have identified the problems now its time to work them out. I'll post pics so everyone can see. Ps kat why do you even own these?

a knife into a poster

This knife is a great design, it really is but it is practically impossible to make a poster about without it looking like an ad in a magazine. It has a great range of uses and applications but you can't put all of them on the poster without it looking cluttered and unorganized. Well hammer to anvil and work it out it guess.

This design poster is driving me nuts. It looks right but yet not right. Try a different background that doesn't work, try a new arrangement that doesn't work. But that is the nature of design isn't it, a lot of trial and error and a lot of falling on your face before it works.

Colors are frustrating

Why is it that when you are just walking around you see all sorts of stuff that is horribly ugly or greatly beautiful. But when yr given an assignment to find certain colors and combinations EVERYTHING SUCKS everything either goes together ok or is not so bad nothing I see fits a hard criteria right now.
